A HANDBUILDING JOURNEY: FUNDAMENTALS TO BRING YOUR IDEAS TO LIFE
with YinMeng Tan

Discover the quiet rhythm of shaping clay by hand as you journey from simple forms to expressive creations. This hands-on class introduces the essential techniques of hand-building through the making of everyday objects that are both functional and personal.

The class begins with a bowl — your introduction to slab building, draping, coiling, and attachment.  Next, you’ll apply these newly acquired skills to craft a mug that comfortably fits your hands, developing an eye for proportion, balance, and finishing details.  In the final stage, you’ll explore the freedom of pinching and combining forms, creating either a small sculpture or, for added challenge, a teapot that reveals your growing artistry.

Open to students of all levels. Having basic wedging skills is a plus, as it allows you to focus more on building during class. Students may arrive 15 minutes earlier to prepare your clay and set up your tools.
